MEDIUM: Functional Art - Furniture

My name is BJ Massa. I am a New Yorker by birth and a Hoosier by choice. I am a self taught maker, creator and painter. I believe art is everywhere. I find it in the most humble of places- the textured patina of rusted metal, the complex layers of an old paint finish, the beautiful silver of old, weathered wood.

Dorothy Parker, the American writer and satirist, once said, “Creativity is a wild mind and a disciplined eye.” My wild mind has the ability to see objects not for what they are but for what they could be. Using my disciplined eye for color, pattern and detail I harness wild ideas to create.

I believe in elevating the everyday into functional art, expressing myself through painting furniture. With every piece I paint, I experiment with color, pattern, texture, new tools and mediums. In my mind’s eye a dresser, for example, is not just a dresser. It is a canvas. It is an opportunity to create something beautiful, unique and lasting. It is the chance to elevate the mundane into a beautiful piece of functional art to be treasured and to spark joy.

I believe that art, in all forms, should be accessible. Every person should be afforded the opportunity to have and behold something beautiful in one’s home.

My work has been recognized by Redbook Magazine, Annie Sloan, and The General Finishes Design Challenge 2017 and 2018. I am the founder and organizer for a group of local furniture painters called The Artisan Markets, a professional selling platform for which I handle day to day operations in addition to mentoring creative entrepreneurs. I was a presenter at The Indianapolis Home Show 2018 and 2019, sharing my expertise about painted furniture. I am also an instructor with Furniture Painting University where I develop and teach my own techniques through video instruction.
